Mission and Objectives

I. To conduct comprehensive academic and policy-oriented research on Japan and East Asian countries, serving as a scholarly platform for government and private institutions in policy consultation and research.

II. To establish a professional think tank of talent, thereby expanding exchanges and fostering mutual understanding with Japan and East Asian countries.

III. To cultivate a new generation for Taiwan–Japan exchanges, actively engage in track two diplomacy between Taiwan and Japan, and enhance the university’s academic visibility.

IV. To integrate research resources both within and beyond the university, supporting the development of the College of Foreign Languages and the Department (and Graduate Institute) of Japanese.

V. To strengthen the university’s research capacity, channel research outcomes into teaching, and align with the institutional policy of advancing toward a teaching-and-research-oriented university.

The characteristics of a nation can only be fully revealed through comparison with others. Such comparative studies must be multi-angled, multi-faceted, and multi-layered. Beyond the humanities and social sciences, they should also incorporate innovative methodologies from the natural sciences and modern research techniques. Thus, “East Asian Studies,” as a new academic discipline, embraces comparative research, interdisciplinary integration, and the application of new methodologies.

The College of Foreign Languages, in addition to the Department of Japanese, houses departments of English, French, German, Spanish, and Italian, as well as the Graduate Institute of Comparative Culture. Combined with the university’s nature as a comprehensive institution, this provides a robust academic environment for integrated research on Japan and East Asian countries. The establishment of the Center for Japanese and East Asian Studies will serve as a platform to consolidate academic resources and research talent, and will stand as a prominent banner for East Asian studies in Taiwan.
